Why Your Wheels Look Dirty Right After Washing
Wheels are the hardest-working surface on a car and the one most often cleaned with the least appropriate product.
What brake dust actually is
Not dust. It is metallic particulate thrown off the pads and rotor at high temperature, and it lands on a hot wheel and embeds into the finish rather than resting on it.
That is why a wheel can be washed and still look grey, and why the finish eventually becomes pitted and permanently dull if it is never properly decontaminated.
Iron removers
A dedicated iron-removing decontaminant chemically dissolves embedded ferrous particles. It is the product that turns purple as it works — that colour change is the reaction with the iron, and it makes the amount of contamination on a wheel unmistakably visible.
This is the step that a wash never includes and that makes the visible difference.
The right process
- Cool wheels. Never clean hot ones — product flashes off and can stain.
- Rinse thoroughly to remove loose grit.
- Iron remover, dwell, agitate with a soft brush.
- Barrels as well as faces. The inside of a wheel holds most of the dust.
- Rinse completely.
- Dress the tyre with a non-sling, non-greasy product.
Then protect them
A sealant or coating on a wheel makes an enormous difference to how easily the next cleaning goes, because brake dust cannot bond directly to the finish. On a car that generates a lot of dust it is one of the better-value protective steps there is.
Hills make it worse
Anyone driving grades — Clermont, the ridge, the Caprock of Central Florida such as it is — generates considerably more brake dust than flat commuting produces.
