The Parts of Your Car Nobody Cleans
Most washing effort goes onto the surfaces people can see. The areas that actually hold grime are the ones underneath.
Why it matters here
Florida does not have road salt, which removes the biggest corrosion driver. What it has instead is:
- Constant moisture from afternoon storms and humidity, so nothing under a car ever fully dries.
- Coastal salt air on anything driven near the water.
- Lake and ramp residue on tow vehicles, which is mineral-rich and holds moisture.
- Organic matter — grass, leaves, mud — packed into wheel wells, which stays wet and rots.
That last one is the source of a great many mystery smells. Organic material packed behind a wheel liner decomposes, and the smell comes into the cabin through the ventilation.
What we clean
- Wheel wells, thoroughly, including behind the liners where material packs.
- The underside of the vehicle, particularly on trucks and anything used at a boat ramp.
- Rocker panels and the lower edges of doors, where road film and clay staining sit.
- Drain channels — the sunroof and cowl drains that block with debris and then leak water into the cabin. This is a genuinely common cause of damp carpet and it is entirely preventable.
Tow vehicles specifically
If a vehicle backs down a ramp, the underside and the wheel wells take everything the lake has. Rinsing them properly afterwards is the single most useful maintenance habit for that vehicle.
The result
Beyond corrosion, a clean underside means a car that smells like a car. A great deal of the odour people try to solve with air freshener is coming from outside the cabin.
