Sprinkler Spotting: The Damage That Happens Overnight
A car parked in a driveway that catches irrigation overspray takes mineral-rich water every night and bakes it dry every morning. It is one of the most consistent sources of paint damage in Central Florida and almost nobody connects the two.
Three stages, and they matter
Stage one — surface deposits. Minerals sitting on top of the clear coat. These come off with a decontamination wash. Easy.
Stage two — bonded deposits. The minerals have adhered. These need a chemical decontamination and frequently a clay bar or a light polish.
Stage three — etching. The mineral has actually eaten into the clear coat, leaving a physical crater. This requires machine polishing to remove clear coat down to the base of the etch. It is correctable but it is real work, and there is a limit to how much clear coat can be removed.
The progression from stage one to stage three can happen in weeks on a car that is being sprinkled nightly in summer.
Why irrigation is worse than rain
Well water and reclaimed water carry far more dissolved mineral than rainwater. It is also applied repeatedly at the same time every day, and it dries on a panel that then heats in the sun — which is precisely the condition that concentrates and bonds the deposit.
What to do
- Move the car or adjust the sprinkler head. This is the actual fix and it costs nothing.
- If it must park there, rinse and dry it in the morning before the sun gets to it.
- Protection helps — a coating or sealant gives the mineral somewhere to sit other than directly on the clear coat, and makes removal far easier.
- Do not let it accumulate. Stage one is a wash. Stage three is a correction.
Well water at home
The same applies to washing a car with well water. If your water is hard, dry the car immediately and completely rather than letting it evaporate, or the wash itself becomes the source of the spotting.
