Odour Removal Versus Masking: Why the Smell Comes Back

Every vehicle we deal with for odour has a source, and until that source is removed the smell returns as soon as whatever is covering it wears off.

Where the smell actually is

  • Carpet and padding, where spilled liquid soaked through and never dried. This is the most common by a wide margin.
  • Under the seats, which is the least-cleaned area of any car.
  • The cabin air filter, which is a damp organic trap and is frequently years old.
  • The evaporator core in the air conditioning, where condensation supports mould growth. This is the source of the classic musty smell that appears when the A/C first comes on.
  • Wheel wells and cowl drains, where organic material rots outside the cabin and comes in through the ventilation.
  • Upholstery, where organic material has been absorbed.

Why extraction is the whole answer

Surface cleaning removes what is on top of fabric. Odour lives in what soaked into it. A hot water extractor injects cleaning solution into the fibre and pulls it back out with the contamination, and that is the step that actually removes the source rather than diluting it.

Then, and only then, treatment

Once the source is gone, an ozone treatment or an enzymatic treatment deals with residual odour molecules. Doing that first — on a car that still has the source in it — buys a few days.

Smoke is the hard case

Smoke residue coats every surface including the headliner and gets into the ventilation system. It genuinely requires the full sequence: complete interior clean, headliner treatment, cabin filter replacement, ventilation treatment, and ozone. It is the most involved interior work there is and it is not a quick job.

Mildew

In Florida humidity, mildew is a moisture problem before it is a cleaning problem. Find where the water is getting in — a blocked sunroof drain, a failed door seal, a leaking cowl — or it will simply come back.
