Hills mean brake dust

Grade driving generates substantially more brake dust than flat commuting, and brake dust is hot metal particulate. It does not sit on a wheel — it embeds into the finish, and left long enough it pits it permanently.

That is why wheels can look permanently dirty however often they are washed. A normal wheel cleaner sprayed and rinsed does not lift embedded iron; an iron-removing decontamination does, and the colour change while it works makes it obvious.

Construction dust and overspray

Clermont has a great deal of new construction, and vehicles parked near it pick up dust, concrete splash and occasionally paint overspray. All of those come off if they are caught reasonably promptly. Cured into the clear coat, they become correction work.
