Microfiber Towel Care: Why Your Towels Are Scratching Your Paint

Most swirl marks on a car that is washed at home come from the towels, not the wash. A microfiber towel that was dropped on the driveway, used on the wheels last week, or washed with fabric softener and dried on high heat is no longer a soft cloth. It is a grit-carrying, non-absorbent pad being dragged across a soft clear coat in the sun. Here is how to keep towels working, how to sort them, and when to throw them out.

What microfiber is

Microfiber is a blend of polyester and polyamide split into fibres far finer than a human hair. The splits are what make it work: they create edges that lift dirt and hold water. Anything that clogs those splits, coats them, or melts them ruins the towel. That is why softener, dryer sheets, heat, and grease are the enemies.

The towels also hold onto whatever they pick up. A grain of sand from the wheel well sits in the fibres until it is washed out. Wipe the hood with that towel and it draws a fine scratch the whole way.

Sort by job, and keep them sorted

  • Paint towels. Plush, clean, used only on paint and glass after washing. These never touch anything else.
  • Glass towels. Low-pile waffle weave, kept separate so they never carry wax or dressing onto the glass.
  • Interior towels. General purpose for plastics and leather.
  • Wheel and dirty towels. Old paint towels that have been demoted. Used on wheels, jambs, exhaust tips, and engine bays, and washed separately.
  • Dressing towels. Anything that has touched tire dressing or trim dressing stays with dressing forever. That product does not wash out completely.

A towel that has been used on the wheels never goes back to paint. A towel that has been dropped on the ground goes straight to the wash pile, not back into the bucket. This is the whole system and it is what we run on the truck.

Washing them

Wash microfiber on its own, never with cotton, which sheds lint into it. Warm water, not hot. A dedicated microfiber detergent or a plain liquid detergent with no softener, no bleach, and no fragrance additives. Fabric softener coats the fibres and kills absorbency instantly; one wash with it and a towel will push water around instead of soaking it up. Dryer sheets do the same.

Heavily soiled towels, the ones with wax, polish, or dressing on them, get a pre-soak in warm water with a little all-purpose cleaner before they go in the machine, and they go in their own load.

Drying them

Low heat or air dry. High heat melts the fibre ends and the towel becomes stiff and scratchy. Tumble dry on low, or hang them out; in Central Florida humidity, hanging works but it takes a while, and towels left damp in a heap will mildew within a day.

Do not dry them with anything that sheds lint.

Storing them

Clean, dry, and folded in a closed container or a bag. Towels left on a shelf in a garage in Florida collect dust and the odd insect, and a towel picked up from an open shelf is already carrying grit.

When to retire a towel

When it is stiff, when it stops absorbing, when it has picked up something that will not wash out, or when it has been on the ground. Retired paint towels become wheel towels. Retired wheel towels become rags for the garage. There is no reason to throw a microfiber away until it has been through the whole cycle, but there is every reason to stop using it on paint the moment it is compromised.

Wash mitts and drying towels

The same rules apply, with more care, because these touch the largest areas. A wash mitt is rinsed in the second bucket throughout the wash, as explained in The Two-Bucket Wash Method at Home, then washed and dried like a towel. A large drying towel is used only on a car that has been rinsed clean and dried flat, and it is the first towel to be replaced when it starts to feel rough. A swirl-marked car is often a car dried with a tired towel, and we go through what those marks are in Paint Correction and Swirl Marks Explained.

FAQ

How many towels do I need for a home wash? Enough that you never reuse a dirty one during the wash. A dozen general towels, two or three drying towels, and a few glass towels is a reasonable starting set.

Can I use vinegar in the wash to restore towels? A small amount in the rinse can help strip softener residue. It is not a substitute for not using softener in the first place.

Why do my towels leave lint on the glass? They were washed with cotton, or they are a cheap blend that sheds. Wash them separately and use a waffle-weave towel on glass.

Do you bring fresh towels to every job? Yes. Clean, sorted towels for every vehicle. It is a basic part of doing a mobile detail without adding scratches.
