Soft Tops and Convertibles in the Florida Sun
A convertible top is the most vulnerable surface on the car and the one most commonly damaged by well-intentioned cleaning.
Know which you have
Fabric (canvas or acrylic) — porous, needs a dedicated fabric cleaner and a fabric protectant that restores water repellency.
Vinyl — non-porous, needs a vinyl cleaner and a UV protectant.
They are not interchangeable. Vinyl products on fabric clog the weave; fabric products on vinyl do very little.
What never goes near a top
- Automatic washes. The brushes will damage the top and the seals.
- Pressure washers at close range, which force water through seams.
- Silicone dressings, which trap dirt and can damage fabric.
- Household cleaners and bleach, which strip colour and the protective treatment.
- Waxes and polishes intended for paint.
The routine
- Vacuum or brush the top dry first to remove loose debris from the weave.
- Dedicated cleaner, soft brush, working in sections.
- Rinse thoroughly at low pressure.
- Dry completely before lowering it. A top folded away damp will mildew — this is the single most common way tops are ruined in Florida.
- Protectant appropriate to the material, restoring water repellency on fabric or UV resistance on vinyl.
Rear windows
Plastic rear windows scratch extremely easily and yellow with UV. Clean them with a dedicated plastic cleaner and a very soft cloth — never glass cleaner with ammonia, which clouds them permanently.
Florida specifics
Sun degrades top material faster here than almost anywhere, and humidity means mildew is a constant risk. Protect it regularly, never fold it away wet, and use a cover or shade where you can. Replacing a top is expensive; maintaining one is not.
